In some region, Christmas Eve celebration has grown to encompass the entire day where it is observed as a full holiday in anticipation of Christmas Day.

Together both days are considered among the most culturally and religiously significant celebrations in Christendom with origins in the festival commemorating the birth of Jesus of any Western society.

What Do People Do at Christmas Eve?

Many people around the world celebrate Christmas Eve in a different style. It is observed in different countries such as Australia, Canada,  United Kingdom and the United States. Workers in some countries get a day off to prepare for Christmas Day including last-minute shopping for presents decorations or food.

In some countries, Christmas Eve is celebrated with large family meals traditional Christmas dishes. In some cultures, presents are exchanged with each other and opened on the night of Christmas Eve. Many homes have their Christmas trees lit up and other decorate their homes and offices at this time of the year.

Some people organize groups of singers who go door to door during the Christmas or sing Christmas carols in public venues. It is also a time for children in many countries around the world to hang their Christmas stocking hoping for a present to arrive from Santa Claus on Christmas Day for them, which is December 25 in the Gregorian calendar.

Children in France keep their shoes near the fireplace because they believe Santa Claus will come and fill them with toys gifts nuts and sweet.Many churches around the world hold special services during Christmas Eve, including midnight services. These services are special choirs and sermons to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

Many churches also display a  miniature Nativity scene. Christmas celebrations in different countries around the world combine the country’s cultural and religious traditions, beliefs and superstitions such as Santa Claus and Christmas trees.

Public Life

christmas eve is a public holiday in some countries around the world.some banks and business are closed in Austria and Germany on Christmas Eve.

many people of Brazil have afternoon work off on Christmas eve.some shopping mall and store are open late night for Christmas shopping.

offices school and educational institution are closed on Christmas eve.we can see many people on airports bus station train stations because people travel one place to another to meet their families.


Christmas Eve is also known as the Vigil of Christmas. Christmas Eve is perceived as the culmination of the Advent season. Christmas Eve is the day before Christmas Day on 24  December and is associated with celebrating Jesus Christ’s birth although his actual date of birth has not been confirmed among many scholars.

Many  Christmas traditions around the world today have their roots in pre-Christian winter festivals. These  Christmas tradition included the importance of candles and decorations made from evergreen bushes and trees which is symbolizing everlasting light and life.

In Roman times a mid-winter festival is held. This is a relaxing time with a lot of parties and merrymaking. It is also common to give other people small presents such as dolls for children and candles for adults.


In old times it was customary to decorate with greenery on festival especially with holly, ivy, and mistletoe. After some discussion the church authorities permitted it to be done on Christian festivals at least from the early seventh century in England. Holly and ivy were associated with good and evil, male and female, and they were often combined.
